Scratch team Subjected to Another Near Miss
Securing promotion to the 1st Division last month came as a great relief and suggested at last we had broken our tradition of always being there or thereabouts but not getting over the finishing line.
No sooner had we clinched promotion we travelled to Crossland Heath for the Yorkshire 2nd Division Team Championship. Our woes continued as we topped the leaderboard all day until being pipped at the last minute by 2 shots. Disappointing however on this occasion we did qualify comfortably for the Team Championship this coming Wednesday.
And so to this week, as we proudly played host to the LDUGC 1st Division Team Championship by virtue of past Captain at Cookridge David Johnston now enjoying his term in office as LDUGC President. The format another 3 man team playing 36 holes individual strokeplay to compile an aggregate team score.
Many would have had Cookridge down as favourites certainly around our own track, however the LDUGC has some fantastic talent and collectively some great teams within the district so calling a winner is nigh on impossible.
Blustery conditions met the players and continued all day with sharp outbreaks of rain at times torrential. At the halfway stage Wike Ridge Led by 3 from Cookridge Hall. Out in the first group Cookridge Hall boys set off like a steam train through the first 9 holes, indeed Tom Madden holed from 10 foot for birdie on the 18th his 9th hole to go out in a commendable -5 under. As the weather turned scores began to climb yet our boys, Tom Madden, Tom Broxup and George Pennells battled away well to return an aggregate of 450 and kickstarted the long agonising wait for scores to come in all over again.
A terrific individual effort by Nigel Sweet scoring 70 – 73 contributed greatly to local rivals Wike Ridge claiming the title by 2 shots from a depleted Cookridge Hall.
Huge congratulations to Wike Ridge and our boys for another top effort and good luck in the forthcoming YUGC Team Championship.
